Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
